The Management Says:

This comment was the description I wrote on Sheezyart
Creating comics is not something I am particularly good at, let alone creating good, well drawn, hilarious, original strips, but there is something about comics which really riles me up, and that is the branch of comics known as "Popular Webcomics".
No doubt you've read at least one, or maybe seen a screenshot of a panel, they're hard to avoid.
Most revolve around 2 protagonists who enjoy video games (see: "Ctrl, alt, delete", "Penny Arcade", "VG Cats") you know the type. The type where every strip the creator just types down his opinion about video games and then maybe adds in a punchline, alternatively, it will just be a reference to a certain game within the comic. These comics are never funny, and rarely change in content, especially "Ctrl, alt, delete" where the creator copies and pastes the same facial expression on to every single character in the comic. No doubt, it's a tried and tested formula, write and draw a shitty comic about characters who like video games, persist, one idiot will say they like it, the sheep follow because they can relate to it because they also like video games. The comics require no effort and are pretty much all rehashed each strip.

Another branch of "Popular Webcomics" is badly drawn anime comics, aswell as anime comics in general (see: deviantART or Sheezy front page). Apart from every character having the same facial and bone structure, really pointy hair, stupid magical powers and some sort of lame backstory there isn't much else to anime comics. Just steal a "so overused it's unfunny" style and possibly a generic anime plot and you're on your way! No jokes are included because you can't stop laughing at the hideous designs thrown at you from the artist. Some are written backwards because the creators wishes to forget all traces of "English" from their bodies, I'd assume it's because they hate the English language but the only reason I could imagine why they'd hate it is because of idiots like themselves destroying it. Plots are usually hard to follow, every character is the same and all of the boy characters tend to pair up with each other while the girl characters just sit around shitting into their own hands. There is no such thing as an original anime comic. People who call anime comics mangas are probably mentally defunct, it's a comic and it is created using anime designs, therefore it is an anime comic.

Another branch, which could possibly fall under the "anime comic" catagory is "Comics which take no effort" (see: Kris Wilson's deviantART gallery). If you know me, you'd know by now how much I hate Kris Wilson and his terrible comics. Each comic is the same as the last, literally. The designs are just copied and pasted and the rectangles usually used as bodies are just changed colours, differentiating between characters is usually left to you figuring out "Character 1 is on the left and Character 2 is on the right, Character 2 says something and as a result dies and Character one says something". There isn't really much else to each comic he makes beyond that. Each comic will contain some shitty one liner as the punch line and someone dying, "BUT IT'S HILARIOUS SO IT'S OKAY!!" I hear you scream, but no. Kris Wilson's comics take about as much effort to create as it does to create a cup of tea. Yet, he still gets the front page on deviantART with everything he creates, which is even more evidence that dA is filled with complete morons who wouldn't know good art if it punched them in the face, ripped out their eyeballs and rubbed them all over it's sleek, elegant body (probably a storyline from one of Kris' comics).

The area of popular webcomics which gets to me the most is "Sprite Comics" (see: SheezyArt, SmackJeeves). You may have seen me opposing sprites around this site, apparently I have no right to do so because "I couldn't do better", however I think by even drawing a circle with the circle tool in flash is doing better than turning shadow's red patches green instead of red. Creating your own original sprites from the ground up is okay, but it's hard to maintain a style which looks even remotely good, and then considering the fact that you're trying to make an original sprite yourself means that you're an annoying 14 year old who repeatedly types 4chan memes over and over on your page and other people's pages, you will realise that creating an original sprite can be kinda hardish, especially if you try to do it in a good style, you will make really ugly sprites and think you're hilarious when it's just really dumb and proves you're a fucking idiot. Comics combining these elements: Sega characters, Nintendo characters, really bad english and overuse of "xD" are all too common and the people who cut and paste the sprites together don't even realise. I don't expect everybody to pick up a pen and instantly be as amazing as me, but at least try to have some creativity and originality in what you make, turning sonic red won't get you anywhere and is just fucking stupid, this site is meant as an Art website, hence the name SheezyArt and to be perfectly honest what you're posting is not art. It's "Google Images: The collage".

Additional note for Smack Jeeves:
I have yet to see a good, interesting, funny, original comic on here, they're all shit, the community is terrible and original artists with original ideas and hilarious or thought provoking comics get no recognition.

Long story short; if a webcomic is popular it's shit.

or even evitaerc's
http://tasteslikechicken.smackjeeves.com/

I guess those are the only "good, interesting, funny, original comic on here" That I like.

I agree with most of what you say but you gotta understand that even though alotta of this stuff is shit. Its free shit.

you hung out on the Smackjeeves forum? snore...

trying to get serious critique there involves 90% of responses saying: "i like it"

needless to say i dont go there much anymore.

free hosting = awesome... community is dead though...

no i've made 2 posts on the sj forums and both of them have been promoting this comic, the first one was deleted, thougj, for being too cool for school. other than that i haven't used the forums here.

Hey, I like Penny Arcade
My opinion is that you care far too much about popularity.

If a webcomic is popular does not guarantee that it will be successful. Being popular on the internet is the most pointless thing in the world, as absolutely nothing good comes from it other than ego stroking.

The ones that are successful tend to be the people who originated the style and the exceptions of the stereotypes.

considering this whole comic and description is about popular webcomics of course i'm going to talk about popular webcomics and people who are "popular" on the "internet".

and if you can afford to commission animators to make shitty webtoons for you (see: pvp, vg cats, ctrl, alt, delete) or even hold a convention, pay someone 10 grand for making an absolutely shitty game, and then have a game made for your shitty comic without even making one decent strip it's really a mockery of people who take time and effort to make original and humourous comic strips.

I agree 100% with this comic. Except Sonic is a fag.

bvhj, 22 Jul 2008 04:46 pm

sonic being a fag was what i was getting at in the last panel, but more importantly, people who make sprite comics, especially ones involving sonic and his many different colours, are huge faggots.
